After Flat Friends member Juliet had texted and tweeted BBC Radio 5 Live about how she made the positive choice to live flat after mastectomy, they asked her if she would like to be a guest editor on the Afternoon Edition show, hosted by Nihal Arthanayake show on September 18th 2018. She was joined by Sarah Coombes – Flat Friends UK Trustee; Joanna Franks – Consultant Breast & Oncoplastic surgeon, and Michelle Nutley who chose to have reconstruction after her double mastectomy. The question posed was “why does it still feel taboo for women to live flat after breast cancer?” We didn’t really answer this but, instead the discussion was very much about women being given all of the options when being told that they need a mastectomy so that they can make an informed choice. Nihal was very engaged in the debate and he was a really empathetic and sensitive interviewer. The audience response was strong and positive. Following the radio show, Juliet did a piece to camera with one of the producers; this went up on the BBC News website and was the most watched video by 10am.
